A qualitative study explores why Black, Hispanic, and Asian patients often hesitate to choose palliative care, highlighting how trust, cultural identity, and a sense of belonging shape care decisions.

This qualitative study in the Journal of Palliative Medicine examines why Black, Hispanic, and Asian patients are less likely to engage in palliative care despite significant needs. Researchers interviewed patients, community leaders, and clinicians to understand the emotional and cultural factors influencing decisions. Findings reveal that patients often feel caught between their community and the medical system, experiencing both inclusion and exclusion, and value palliative care that preserves a sense of safety, agency, and cultural belonging. Insights from this study suggest that outreach and messaging emphasizing trust, cultural respect, and supportive relationships can help improve engagement with palliative care in underserved communities.
